Why does Sustainable Fashion Matter?

‘The biggest threat to the environment is the belief that someone else will save it. ‘And this showcases the human characteristic of ignorance, negligence towards the environmental issues. Nature is no one’s property to be destroyed; it’s everyone’s property to protect. But, we are ever so dependent on government authorities and special agencies to work towards environmental preservation. It’s, however, momentous, that we humans, come to an understanding that the environment is not inherited by us from our ancestors, but borrowed by us from our future generations. Our contribution towards the environmental issues needn’t necessarily involve huge campaigns, strikes, rallies, or any large-scale events involving the masses. Even a small piece of writing, aimed at creating awareness among the masses and raising the voice of the voiceless, can be influential in bringing about significant changes to people's mindsets.

But what is more important is the spread of the message of sustainable living. Sustainability deals with the practice of using natural resources in a manner that fulfills the needs of present generations, without the requirement to compromise the needs of future generations. Just talking about sustainability isn’t enough, just giving long speeches at the discussions isn’t sufficient to change the opinions of an ordinary man. We need to learn why we need to protect nature. We need to know how we can contribute, and why sustainability matters.

Forests are burning down, oceans are drying up, wildlife is losing its habitat, and land is heading towards degradation, what else are we waiting for, to take action, nature is losing its glory, and we humans are still engaged in those wealth-generating activities, which shall all, become useless, once the nature is destroyed, all due to our negligence. This calls for our realization, an understanding of our responsibilities to work towards the creation of a state of harmony between man and land, for a greener and cleaner future.

Thus, sustainability becomes a necessity in our everyday life, for us to contribute our bit towards environmental conservation and we need to incorporate sustainable measures into our everyday lifestyle, ranging from the food we eat to the clothes we wear, from the products we use to the sources of energy we apply, for our home appliances.

Switching over to sustainable clothing, eco fashion, is a measure that might seem new to many, something not usually practiced, but this is the reality. We need to stop the use of plastic-made products, energy sources using fossil fuels, and garments made of plastic or its by-products.

Sustainable clothing deals with the garments made by using eco-friendly products and not harming nature at any cost. These clothes seemingly provide you with a distinctive look, just as the normal garments, which are, however, made from some harmful substances, which might be responsible for causing environmental pollution. But these sustainably prepared clothes are made from products like recycled polyester, recycled cotton, organic bamboo, organic hemp, organic linen, etc. which are environmentally friendly.

Sustainability can relate to every aspect of our life and can be successfully incorporated into our life. Sustainable foods are those types of products that are produced using methods that are clean and safe for the environment. Energy sources used by us for our home appliances, must not be prepared using fossil fuels like coal and petroleum, and we need to switch over to renewable sources of energy, such as solar energy, wind energy, tidal energy, hydroelectricity, etc. Sustainable products for daily use might include cloth napkins, cotton shopping bags, LED bulbs, stainless steel bottles, biodegradable pots, etc.

We all need to walk together on this path of sustainability, to work for a better future for this planet Earth.
